Fighting the Good Fight // A conversation with Congressman Anthony D’Esposito

Anthony P. D’Esposito, a member of the Republican Party, has represented New York’s 4th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives since 2023, where he has been a passionate and steadfast advocate for Israel. His victory in the 2022 midterm election was considered a major upset, contributing to the narrow Republican majority in the House. In 2023 he was appointed to the board of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Before entering politics, D’Esposito was a police officer with the NYPD’s 73rd Precinct Detective Squad, Military and Extended Leave Desk. Born on February 22, 1982, he joined the NYPD in 2006 and worked there until retiring in 2020.

In 2016, D’Esposito was appointed as a councilman on the Hempstead, New York, town council and won a full term the following year, where he served until 2023.

I spoke to the congressman this past Friday.

The Jewish community has been very moved by the fact that you have not only been so supportive of them and the State of Israel, but you have done so with great empathy.
Well, it’s the right thing to do. It’s unfortunate to see what’s happening across this country, and obviously what’s happening in Israel. Quite frankly, the reaction of so many elected officials is frightening.

The Republican Party seems to be solidly behind the good cause, if I may call it that. What is your assessment of both parties?
I agree that Republicans have shown staunch support of Israel in making sure it has the resources necessary to eradicate Hamas from the planet. Republicans from all over the country have been speaking loudly in support of Jewish causes, especially in the face of so much hatred and anti-Semitism. Although we cannot disregard the fact that a handful of Democrats has done the same thing, overall, the actions of the Democratic Party and the lack of leadership coming from the administration have been outright startling. Biden says one thing and does another.
Chuck Schumer, who is the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in the country, has flat out undermined not only the leadership in Israel but also the State of Israel. There is no question that when our adversaries in Iran and its proxies, the terrorist organizations, see the US and people like Schumer undermining Israel, it emboldens them. I’ve compared this to the way Democrats have emboldened criminals and terrorists and others who are spewing hate in America.
